Travel advisories are a hot topic right now—and while they’re a useful tool for trip planning, their guidance isn’t always as clear-cut as it seems.
If you’ve checked the U.S. State Department’s latest updates and felt unsure about what they mean for your travel plans, here’s what you should know.
Travel Advisories Are Not Travel Bans
First and foremost, a travel advisory (even a high-level one) doesn’t automatically mean you can’t or shouldn’t visit a destination. In most cases, these advisories are simply recommendations to help travelers make informed decisions.
Level 1: Exercise normal precautions (most popular destinations fall here).
Level 2: Exercise increased caution (still very common for tourist spots).
Level 3: Reconsider travel (some well-visited destinations, like Jamaica, are currently in this category).
Level 4: Do not travel (typically reserved for extreme situations—not typical vacation spots).
Unless a destination is Level 4, the advisory is more about awareness than prohibition.
Advisories Can Be Overly Broad
The State Department’s system uses just four levels, which means countries with very different risks can end up in the same category. For example:
Many safe, tourist-friendly places are listed as Level 2—often with vague reasons like “crime” or “terrorism” without much detail.
Some Level 3 destinations (like Jamaica) remain popular with travelers who take basic precautions.
In places like Mexico, advisories vary by region—resort areas are often much safer than the advisory might suggest.
What Should You Do?
Don’t overreact. An advisory is just one piece of the puzzle.
Do your research. Look into the specific areas you’re visiting—often, tourist zones have different risks than other parts of a country.
Ask for advice. If you’re concerned, I can help you sort through the details, assess real risks, and even explore alternative destinations if needed.
At the end of the day, travel advisories are a starting point—not the final word. With the right information and precautions, you can still enjoy amazing trips while staying safe and informed.
